Missile Defense Software Engineer Job ID 9961

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) has been solving the technical challenges faced by the military, science community, and industry since 1959. SDL is a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) and provides sensors, small satellites, ground stations, and other enabling technologies to many government agencies.

SDL is seeking a missile defense software engineer to support a senior software technical advisory role in Huntsville, Alabama. This individual will support Missile Defense Agency (MDA) programs. The selected candidate will have demonstrated software engineering expertise and sound knowledge of the application of software systems engineering. The individual will be embedded within the government support software team and have algorithm and simulation (SAS) responsibilities on the Redesigned Kill Vehicle (RKV) program, as part of the Technical Direction Agent (TDA) for the Ground Based Midcourse Defense Program (MDA/GM).  The individual will focus on resolution of technical risk and tactical software development through the understanding of the software architecture, intended functionality, and maturity.  The candidate may support other missile defense software, modeling, simulation, and analysis efforts.

Responsibilities include:

·     Full-time, embedded position within the RKV Product Office

·     Primary work location in Huntsville, Alabama Von Braun IV (and/or local suitable office)

·     Focus on resolution of technical risk for the RKV Module Level TIMs and the RKV design reviews

·     Evaluation of algorithms to assess feasibility, maturity, and intended use

·     Development of concepts, algorithm modifications, and code modifications to improve performance or resolve issues identified (i.e., a solution-oriented approach not just  identifying issues)

·     Review of software-related Objective Evidence (OE)

·     Manage and execute software development efforts, including the development of software and applications

·     Define software-related expectations for technical and design reviews to ensure expectations are clearly conveyed to all stakeholders and panel members

·     Build plans of action and motivate action to move the SAS Integrated Product Team (IPT) and the Prime Contractor toward stated goals and objectives for design reviews, post-design testing, and deployment efforts in the future

·     Develop approaches that help mature software over time in the context of a fast-moving and politically-sensitive program that must maintain key program milestones to meet flight test and production objectives

·     Experience evaluating code, running models and simulations, and developing custom toolsets (as required) to evaluate code/functionality

·     Experienced reviewer of Software Design Documentation

·     Develop and/or apply advanced software design methods in the investigation and solution of missile defense problems

·     Lead the definition of documentation and processes to support technical tasks

Required Qualifications:

·     BS in electrical engineering, computer science, or computer engineering, plus at least 12 years of relevant experience in hands-on software engineering that aligns with the needs above

·     Strong interpersonal skills: Candidate is required to work effectively with a broad and diverse team from the Government, Industry, and FFRDC/UARCs.

·     Must be a US citizen and have an active DoD secret security clearance with ability to obtain a DoD top secret-SCI clearance

o   Experience acting as an analyst supporting missile defense-related analysis tasks

o   Design, development, and test experience on major DoD programs

o   Working knowledge of current MDA Ballistic Missile Defense programs and/or systems (e.g. GMD, THAAD, AEGIS, Kill Vehicles, Sensors and/or CBMC2)

o   Experience developing analysis tools and techniques to address technical problems (e.g. using Software, MATLAB, Python)

Preferred Qualifications:

·     MS in electrical engineering, computer science, or computer engineering plus 10 years of experience

·     PhD in electrical engineering, computer science, or computer engineering plus 8 years of experience

·     Recent experience in Ballistic Missile Defense System programs or technologies

·     Experience with DoD software engineering, modeling, and simulation policies and best practices
